Transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM) and Transanal Minimally Invasive Surgery (TAMIS) are techniques to access mid to high rectal tumors such as carcinoid, polyp, and sometimes early rectal cancers through a transanal approach, thereby avoiding more radical rectal surgery (low anterior resection; LAR).

Using a special device placed in the rectum, both techniques allow the rectum to be filled with air to improve visibility and navigate higher up in the rectum than previously possible. By this technique rectal polyps and certain small tumors can be removed without making an abdominal incision.

To find out more about TEM or TAMIS, call to make an appointment with Dr. Zaghiyan in her office in Los Angeles for a thorough evaluation, exam, and treatment recommendations.
