Pilonidal disease typically starts with a boil or abscess near the tailbone. Initial treatment may involve unroofing the abscess to drain the pus. The wound may be packed open to heal inside out.
After the acute infection is treated, a chronic sinus may form, in which case Dr. Zaghiyan may recommend conservative measures such as hair removal by shaving or laser as initial therapy. Shaving should be continued on a weekly basis until complete healing has occurred.
If conservative measures fail, surgical excision or removal of the sinus tract and closure with flaps may be recommended. There is some down time associated with such surgery.
